What inspired you to pursue a career in procurement?

I like learning about economics and supply chains. So much goes into supplying even the simplest everyday things. Procurement is one part of a much larger process that can start on the other side of the world.

What’s a common misconception people have about procurement?

People tend to think it is a simplistic process. But that’s where our work comes in. We do the behind the scenes work to make ordering seem seamless.

How do you approach building strong relationships with vendors or suppliers?

I always try to be friendly and treat vendors as partners. People bark orders at them all the time, but they’re people too. Though we’re customers, there’s always a give and take.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Leave a paper trail. Always leave a paper trail. Document everything.

What tools or strategies do you rely on for efficient contract management?

I don’t yet do much with contract management. I’m hoping to gain more experience in that area and grow in this field.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

Japan. I don’t even have to think about it. They have everything. lol

What emerging trend in procurement excites you the most?

There have been two, I think, complementary trends towards supply chain resiliency and green sourcing. These are the most interesting areas for me. Like I said, so much goes into supplying everyday items and the more robust we can make these critical systems, and ensure their viability for the future, the better.

What’s your go-to productivity or motivation tip?

I try to make lists and break bigger tasks into smaller chunks. It helps tremendously to stay organized and prevent you from being overwhelmed.
